Pavement Design

AASHTO R50-09, Standard of Practice

Design procedures use experimentally derived input parameters that are often geosynthetic specific. Thus, computed engineering designs and economic benefits are not easily translated to other geosynthetics. Therefore, users of this document are encouraged to affirm their designs with field verification of the reinforced pavement performance, both in engineering design and economic benefits.

Design values need to be based on full-scale, highly controlled and monitored testing. Values and design methods should be reviewed by independent authorities with expertise in pavement design and geosynthetics.

What properties matter in a geosynthetic when it is being incorporated into a pavement design?

The physical properties of geogrids do not correlate directly to full-scale testing results. They are not inputs to accepted pavement design methods and cannot be used to predict in-ground performance or compare geogrid products. More details on physical properties, such as tensile strength, can be found on the Frequently Asked Concerns and Questions Comparing Geosynthetics for Roadbed Applications page.

What testing and review should be performed to accurately develop design parameters and model performance of geogrids in roadbed applications?

Testing and review needed, as outlined by recognized pavement design experts, includes laboratory testing, full-scale third-party Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT), third-party expert review and third-party field validation.
