Tensar geogrid saves construction schedule after chemical stabilization failure.
- Owner: Goodwill
- Contractor: Kerr Contractors
Cement treatment was originally used to stabilize the subgrade for the construction of a Goodwill. The contractor followed the recommended practice of installing 5% cement treatment at 12 - 16ft deep. However, the subgrade experienced premature failure. Some of the crew stated that the site appeared as if the cement was never placed.
With the Tensar solution, the contractor avoided delays by deploying geogrid to repair the chemical-stabilized area. A Tensar representative performed a Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) test on the site to determine the worst area. A solution using 10 in. of AB over Tensar TriAx geogrid was used to successfully stabilize the site compared to the original design requiring 24 in. of over-excavation and replacement with quarry spalls.
