Heniff Transportation ISO Yard
July 2021
Heavy shipping containers supported by Tensar® InterAx™ geogrid.
- Contractor: P. Walker Brothers Excavation
The site was originally intended to be a gravel parking lot, but plans changed and an ISO tank storage yard was proposed instead. Loaded tanks weigh up to 52,000 pounds on average, and they were to be stacked two high with a potential third empty tank, totaling 112,000 pounds combined over a 20 foot by 8 foot footprint. The reach stacker that moves these tanks weighs up to 240,000 pounds when loaded with a tank. With a subgrade CBR of 3%, the original parking lot design of geotextile fabric covered by 12" of porous granular embankment (PGE) capped by 6" of CA-6 asphalt millings was determined to be inadequate.
PCASE software was used to provide the contractor with a viable solution. The contractor built a design consisting of geotextile fabric on the bottom covered with 12" of PGE topped with a layer of Tensar NX850 geogrid and 6" of CA-6 asphalt millings. The design passed proof roll.
