Tensar® InterAx® Geogrid Repair Menu Provides Quick Solutions for Soft Soil Subgrades

  • Contractor: Castle Rock Construction
  • Owner: Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT)
Client's Challenge

Improvements were planned to CO 115 to upgrade roadway and bridge safety. The project scope included new passing lanes, right turn lanes, and performing much needed rehabilitation of aging and distressed pavements. During the earthwork phases, the contractor was regularly encountering soft subgrades, with CBRs as low as 0.6%. With a tight construction schedule and restricted construction hours during lane closures, the frequency of encountering soft subgrades put the project at risk of missing critical CDOT deadlines.

Tensar Solution

To minimize delays, Tensar worked with the contractor and CDOT to develop a menu of soft subgrade repairs based on various subgrade strengths. Tensar trained the contractor to perform Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing to quickly determine subgrade strength and the preapproved mechanically stabilized layer which included Tensar InterAx NX850 geogrid. This solution provided seamless real-time problem solving and helped keep the project on schedule and on budget.
