High-Profile Class 1 Rail Shipper

The client needed immediate rail access to another part of their facility due to capacity expansion and congested rail traffic at the existing switch. The project was already behind schedule and had a very short track construction window because railroad construction forces were scheduled to make the tie in. The track section was to be constructed over very soft soils that included a significant cut and then was to be replaced with lime treated structural fill. Tensar received an urgent call late one evening to see if we could assist with their project since they lacked the time required for the lime to cure.

Tensar proposed a three-layer design using two different multiaxial geogrids: one for subgrade stabilization in lieu of lime and for sub ballast reinforcement, and another with larger apertures for ballast reinforcement. The design had to be approved by the owner, Wilson/Company, SNC Lavalin, Benesch, Hanson, Fugro, the class 1 railroad, and Force Corporation.
